World Atlas + Red Shoe Diaries

WORLD ATLAS
RED SHOE DIARIES
Wednesday August 4th
Malt Cross
St. James's Street, Nottingham
Doors at 8pm
Free Entry

Brooklyn band World Atlas started in 2006 as a handful of four-track bedroom demos, sketches of songs mirroring stories afforded by the city. The idea culminated in a full ensemble including guest member Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good to Me, City Center) on guitar and The Umbrella Girls, who often serve as the group’s hand clappers, back-up singers and tambourine shakers. Their first self-titled EP is a pop atlas steeped in nostalgia and allegory that exudes an aesthetic of a library of weathered books, stolen glances and faded colors. Their instrumentation includes vibraphone, organ, shakers, trumpet and string arrangements taking the music beyond the pop confines of drums, bass and guitar. Infused with boy / girl harmonies and countermelodies the resulting songs depict both innocence and experience. World Atlas fit comfortably into the orchestral pop genre and also draw on earlier pop influences like Donovan, The Smiths, The Velvet Underground and French YéYé. Their first EP is out on Magic Marker Records and work on a full length is underway.

Support comes from Nottingham's Red Shoe Diaries who be playing finely crafted dreamy indiepop in the vein of Belle & Sebastian and The National. They've not played Nottingham in a while, so this will serve as a welcome back from IndieTracks Festival and as a going away party for their upcoming shows at Summer Sundae in Leicester and their debut gig on the continent in Paris.

The Wave Pictures - show confirmed

Good news! We're well pleased to announce that The Wave Pictures will be coming to Nottingham to play a show on Tuesday June 1st. Here are the current details...

THE WAVE PICTURES
OF MICE AND MENTAL ARITHMETIC
JAPANESE SLEEPERS
Tuesday June 1st
Spanky Van Dykes
17 Goldsmith Street, Nottingham
Doors at 8pm
Entry is £6 in advance / £7 on the door

The Wave Pictures have been around for ages, but it's only over the last two or three years they've been getting the attention they deserve. With recent releases on Moshi Moshi records they've shown that they're among the best songwriters on the planet today (no shit). With songs mixing heartbreak and humour in equal measure they draw upon influences such as Jonathan Richman and The Violent Femmes and throw in the occasional brain-melting guitar solo on top. On top of their own extensive back catalogue they have also helped contribute to that of such notables as The Mountian Goats, Darren Hayman and Stanley Brinks (Herman Dune).

We've been trying to get them to play for ages - this should be awesome! They got a nice review on Pitchfork this week (if you hold their opinion in high esteem). Check it out here - http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14183-instant-coffee-baby-if-you-leave-it-alone/.

Hexicon + Red Shoe Diaries + Moustache Of Insanity

HEXICON
RED SHOE DIARIES
MOUSTACHE OF INSANITY
Saturday April 17th
Lee Rosy's Tea
Broad Street, Nottingham
Doors at 8pm
Entry is £4 on the door (or £3 with a stamped flyer from The Corner Store on April 16th)

Hexicon started as a lo-fi voice/guitar/french horn combo in 2004 and got told they sounded like a junk shop Beach Boys. Red Shoe Diaries write lyrical, catchy songs, broadly categorised as indie‐pop yet with occasional forays into dreamy grandeur and sounds that their five fragile hearts can’t contain. Moustache of Insanity play guitar and casio keyboard and try to make up the rest using whatever they have lying around. They like lots of music.
